Illinois TRM Updates: What You Need to Know About Auto-Diverting Tub Spouts

As of January 1, 2025, auto-diverting tub spouts including Evolve’s ShowerStart® Express Tub Spout will be included in the Illinois TRM. Historically, shower products included in the TRM have focused on low-flow showerheads. This update comes as a welcome change for utilities and programs looking for new and innovative ways to cost effectively reach water and energy efficiency goals.

Meet Evolve's ShowerStart® Express Tub Spout!

This auto-diverting tub spout is designed to boost water and energy efficiency especially in residential and multifamily programs. The ShowerStart® Express Tub Spout automatically diverts water to the showerhead once the water reaches a comfortable temperature, delivering hot water up to three times faster. During the shower, it’s thermostatic seal prevents drips from the tub spout helping to save up to five gallons per shower.

The ShowerStart® Express Tub and Shower System: A Game-Changer for Bathroom Efficiency

If you love the features and savings of the ShowerStart® Express Tub Spout, add the Multifunction Showerhead and you have the full Tub and Shower System. The ShowerStart® Express Tub and Shower System saves water in three key ways:

  • Saves water and energy before showering begins by slowing water to a trickle from the showerhead until the bather is ready.
  • Reduces hot water wait times and waste by purging initial cold water from the plumbing lines at up to 5 gpm.
  • Eliminates tub spout diverter leaks while bathers are showering to help save up to give gallons of bathing temperature water during the shower.
  • Minimizes risk of water damage by preventing tub overflows since the water is automatically diverted to the showerhead where it’s slowed to a trickle until the bather is ready to shower.

Together, these features can save up to 15 gallons of water per shower, all while providing a high-pressure, luxurious experience.

Here's how it works:

Once this system is installed, bathers turn-on their shower or bath as usual.

  • The initial cold water that must exit the pipes before hot water can arrives is purged through the tub spout at rates up to 5 gpm – allowing hot water to arrive up to 3X faster.
  • As soon as bathing temperature water (~95°F )arrives the tub spout thermostatically seals, and automatically diverts hot water to the systems’ showerhead where the flow is slowed
  • to a trickle until the bather is ready to get - in saving an average of 5 gallons in behavioral waste
  • The tub spout’s thermostatic sealing also eliminates tub spout diverter leaks while showering – a common problem that occurs in approximately 1/3rd of all tub spouts accounting for nearly 5 gallons of hot water waste per shower.
  • Featuring a high performance WaterSense certified showerhead the system delivers warm, soothing, high pressure showering sprays saving and additional 5 gallons per shower.

If a bath is preferred, the bather would flip the small lever on top of the tub spout to switch the flow of water from going to the showerhead, to come back to the tub spout.
